Acoustic barriers—also called sound barriers—block noise from being transmitted from one location to another. Usually made of mass loaded vinyl (MLV), sound-absorbing panels reduce the amount of airborne sound that is transmitted through floorboards, housings, firewalls, enclosures, or other spaces. MLV is a dense material that provides supplementary mass to an existing structure to block airborne sound transmission. It can also be hung as a mass partition.

Technicon manufactures high-quality acoustic sound barriers for OEM equipment. The industries we commonly serve include:

  • Agriculture
  • Air compressor
  • Construction
  • Marine
  • Medical
  • Power generation
  • Transportation, truck, and specialty vehicles

These industries all rely on equipment that creates considerable noise as well as vibrations and heat that can be uncomfortable or even harmful to workers. To combat this, OEMs use enclosures to contain and minimize the sound. Acoustic absorber materials used to create these enclosures manage air paths to trap sound waves, minimizing their ability to affect ambient environments.

However, traditional enclosure styles or improperly lined enclosures can not only be less effective than newer designs, but they can actually amplify sound. Technicon’s acoustic panels for soundproofing provide superior noise reduction using the most effective materials available. Mass loaded vinyl sound barriers are a high-performance solution for blocking noise since it serves as a flexible barrier to absorb the energy from soundwaves. At Technicon, many of our sound-blocking products combine MLV with decoupling materials and absorbers to both block and absorb noise, ensuring the most effective results for our customers.

How Do Acoustic Barriers Work?

Acoustic sound barriers are made from a combination of soundproofing materials, including mass loaded vinyl. These soundproof assemblies in roof, walls, and other enclosures prevent sound transmission to adjacent spaces. In heavy-duty industrial environments, heavy-duty sound barriers remain effective even under challenging, high-temperature conditions.

At Technicon, we create composite materials—consisting of decoupling and absorber materials—that can absorb and block noise simultaneously. While acoustic foam panels absorb sound and echo, barriers block noise from traveling from one place to another. Although MLV barriers are heavy, they are not very thick, which allows them to block sound more effectively without taking up excess space. This is especially important in construction sites, engine compartments, and other applications where space is limited.

Acoustic Barrier Industries & Applications

Nearly all industries use noisy machinery in some capacity. In these applications, using mass loaded vinyl for soundproofing results in improved comfort and safety for workers. At Technicon, we create customized solutions for diverse applications, such as:

  • Bulkheads
  • Firewalls
  • Pipe wrap
  • Cab floors
  • Engine compartments
  • Heavy equipment enclosures
